Electric Bills are set to Increase in June for 65 Million Americans. Here's why.

In the July capacity auction, PJM’s costs for ensuring reliability spiked, rising from $2.2 billion at the previous auction to a whopping $14.7 billion. As a result, electricity bills in the coming capacity year (starting June 1st, 2025) will increase for residents in PJM’s territory.

Consumer electric bills could increase by as much as 30%, but the increased costs that consumers will see on their electric bills will vary significantly by state and individual utility. Additionally, there are a variety of factors that could affect the overall increase that could change before the increase kicks in in June.

Fearing higher electricity costs, Shapiro files grid suit

Pennsylvania’s governor is sounding the alarm: unless the region’s grid operator rewrites its “broken” auction rules, you could see your electric bill jump by mid-summer.

  • Capacity auction prices jumped 800% this summer—adding roughly $14 billion in costs that utilities must now absorb before passing them on to customers.
  • Shapiro’s FERC complaint targets PJM’s high price cap and its jammed 3,300-project interconnection queue, urging lower caps and faster approvals to prevent artificial scarcity.
  • One major utility warns this could mean an extra $50/month if caps stay unchanged.
